At age 9, him and his family escaped to Pennsylvania while on leave for a funeral. Henry spent two years at sea working on a ship, then reunited with his family in New York. He attended school for seven years, including the African Free School (founded by white abolitionist John Jay). In 1835, he met his future wife at the Noyes Academy in New Hampshire. Having advocated for abolition, he angered many segregationists, eventually transferring to Oneida in Whitesboro to continue his theological studies. A sports injury required his leg getting amputated in 1840. In 1842, Henry began six years as a pastor at the Liberty Street Presbyterian Church in Troy, NY. He wrote and spoke against slavery, joining The American Anti-Slavery Society (founded by white abolitionists William Lloyd Garrison and Arthur Tappan). Henry was a radical, advocating slave rebellion, and supported The Liberty Party until it was absorbed by the Republicans, who he disagreed with. In 1849, Henry fonded the African Civilization Society, calling for emigration to safe spaces outside America, looking to establish a colony in Yoruba in West Africa. A year later, he went to Britain to speak for the Free Labor Movement, opposing slave labor. He stayed there for almost three years, doing speaking engagements. Then, he went to Kingston, Jamaica as a missionary. Once the Civil War began, Henry returned to focus on organizing black army units, recruiting troops and serving as their minister. After the war ended, Henry was the first black minister to preach to the House of Representatives. A few years later, Henry was president of Avery College, in Pittsburgh PA. Henry served the church until his later years, moving to Liberia, where he died and was given a state funeral. Plus, the dude has badass facial hair.
